Traveling Gym

In the military, we travel a lot, and it’s not always to a nice established base with all the amenities… Especially for my fellows-in-arms in the Army and Marines. What can you do when you don’t have a great fitness center nearby, or you don’t have access to exercise equipment? Maybe jogging is not an option due to safety concerns or unfamiliarity with the area.

There’s an app for that.

It’s called You Are Your Own Gym, and it’s the Y entry for the blog challenge.

Filled with videos, instructions, and techniques, this app makes use of the only piece of gym gear you always have with you – your body. It gives a wide variety of activities you can perform to push yourself to your limits, using only body weight and occasionally various things you can hang on.

Pushups bore you? There are several hardcore varieties to challenge even the strongest athlete.

Tired of the same old squats or lunges? There are about 30 exercises focused on legs.

Most of the exercises include variations, and all are categorized by difficulty.

If you’re running some circuits or trying to get a good variety of exercises, and you’re in a rut doing the same stuff that’s familiar, this is a great way to find some inspiration.

You can build your own workout, follow a guided program, or get a quick workout that randomly chooses from up to 81 exercises, at various difficulty levels according to your selection.

If memory serves, it costs a couple bucks of the iTunes App Store. It’s a great resource well worth the price.
